International cricket continues to reestablish itself in Pakistan, and following the home series against Ireland, Sri Lanka, and South Africa, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed an upcoming action-packed 8-match white-ball series in April-May 2024.
Following their tour of Pakistan in 2021, the West Indies are slated to return for 3 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and keeping in mind the Twenty20 (T20) Asia Cup and T20 World Cup scheduled for later this year, the series also features 5 T20 Internationals (T20Is), all to be played at the National Bank Stadium, Karachi.
This forthcoming ODI series will be their last on home soil as part of the ICC Women’s Championship 2022/23-25, with a tour of England slated for May 2024. In the Championship points table, Pakistan is currently seeded 3rd with 8 wins and 10 defeats from 18 games, the most any team has played, and the West Indies are seeded 9th, with 3 wins and 7 defeats.
Pakistan and West Indies have faced off in 34 ODIs, with the latter in pole position with 24 wins. However, they have 3 wins and as many defeats in the previous 6 games.
On the ODI series, Head of Women’s Cricket Tania Mallick, stated, “We extend a warm welcome to the West Indies women’s team to Pakistan for the upcoming series. With the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25 coming to its conclusion for the Pakistan women’s team, the stakes are higher than ever for the women’s team to qualify directly for the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup. The current position of the Pakistan women’s team reflects our determination and dedication, and we aim to collect maximum points from the three championship matches at home.”
With the T20 Asia Cup in August/September and the T20 World Cup in September-October, the 5 matches in this series will serve as a perfect build-up for the team. In T20s, West Indies again hold the edge in head-to-head contests, winning 11 games, losing 3, and the remaining resulting in a draw.
On the 5-match T20I series, Tania Mallick, said, “Later this year, the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is also taking place. In light of this event and the team’s recent good performances in the shortest format, we have scheduled five T20Is against West Indies. The T20I series will help the selectors finalise the squad for the mega event.”
