The biggest cricketing carnival of the year is all set to unroll. Indian Premier League kick starts on the weekend. The broadcasters have recently announced the panel of commentators for the two-month-long tournament. There are names like Ian Bishop, Sunil Gavaskar and all-time favorite Harsha Bhogle.
Star Sports, the broadcasters, have announced a set of different commentators for Hindi and other languages as well. One of the most common voices for Indian Cricket lovers, Anjum Chopra makes her way to the list as well. Along with Anjum, Lisa Sthalekar is also part of the elite panel.
Lisa has been in the news recently for her induction into the ICC Hall of Fame. Anjum, on the other hand, has been considered as the voice of women’s cricket in the Indian subcontinent. The addition of female commentators in the panel will provide a multifold advantage to the game.
It will provide a “change” to all those spectators who have seen men hold the mic for ages. Moreover, in a society like India, these steps are a great initiative to break societal boundaries. A female voice in ears of billions around the Indian subcontinent will make people aware that the game is not limited to men. Moreover, it will inspire young girls to take up the game and rise in the eyes of crores of cricket lovers.
On a different note, it must be noted that as we walk in times ahead, it will be healthy to see a rise in the numbers of female commentators and panelists. This can emerge as a healthy and beneficial arena for retired players where they are secured financially and still have the luxury of being close to the game and serving the sport as well.
These hopes are things of the future. For now, we should hope that Anjum with wisdom, and Lisa with her accurate insights can win over the hearts of the fans. We, from Female Cricket, would wish Lisa and Anjum along with all participants of IPL a safe and successful season of the tournament.
