South Africa will be touring West Indies for the second time in history after 2012 series which ended in a draw (2-2) where West Indies came from behind 2-0 to make it 2-2 .On the other hand West Indies had won the last two series they played on Proteas soil ( 2-1 in 2016 and 2-1 in 2005) but it’s always hard to choose one from these two sides , they both look equally good and balanced sides and it’s all come to executing the plans in the end.
The Teams for the series will be:
Windies Women ODI squad:
Stafanie Taylor(c), Merissa Aguilleira, Shemaine Campbelle, Shamilia Connell, Deandra Dottin, Afy Fletcher, Qiana Joseph, Kycia Knight, Hayley Matthews, Natasha McLean, Chedean Nation, Shakera Selman, Anisa Mohammed
Windies Women T20I squad:
Stafanie Taylor(c), Merissa Aguilleira, Shemaine Campbelle, Shamilia Connell, Deandra Dottin, Afy Fletcher, Qiana Joseph, Kycia Knight, Hayley Matthews, Natasha McLean, Chedean Nation, Shakera Selman, Anisa Mohammed, Sheneta Grimmond, Karishma Ramharack
South Africa Women ODI Squad:
Dane van Niekerk(c), Chloe Tryon, Laura Wolvaardt, Lizelle Lee, Sune Luus, Mignon du Preez, Marizanne Kapp, Shabnim Ismail, Raisibe Ntozakhe, Masabata Klaas, Zintle Mali, Trisha Chetty, Saarah Smith, Robyn Searle
Both West Indies and South Africa will play 3 ODI’s and all the matches are very crucial as they wants to add some points in ICC Women’s Championship having lost their last series to New Zealand (0-3) and England (1-2) respectively.
West Indies is going to host T20 World Cup later this year, so the T20’s will be equally important from preparation point of view. Both the sides and specially South Africa will try to understand the nature of pitches and thereafter will look for the right winning combination as they will be aiming to win first World Cup for their country.
Talking about the players to look out for , both West Indies and South Africa depends heavily on their captains Stefanie Taylor and Dane van Niekerk( 162 runs in last 3 matches).
South Africa’s Lizelle Lee showed tremendous form against England where she made 211 runs in 3 matches averaging 105.50 and Laura Wolvaardt looks great in that opening slot and have given good starts in the past. Shabnam Ismail and Marizanne Kapp are one of the best pacers in the world and furthermore they got great leg spinner Dane van Niekerk with them.
Whereas West Indies batting performance is of some concern as none other than Stefanie Taylor looks impressive ( made 310 runs in last 7 innings including T20’s ) but they got good all rounders like Hayley Matthews ( 159 runs and 6 wicket in last series) and some good bowlers like Deandra Dottin , Afy Flecther and Shamilia Connel.
On paper South Africa is a better side with all the ammunition in the world. They got hitters in beginning and the end , consistent batswomen in middle , great pace and spin attack and they are a good fielding side. But being a host and history on their side West Indies will give a tough fight and may surprise the visitors .
So the contest between these two nations will be the one to look out for as they will try to gain momentum for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
