Netherlands’ Frederique Overdijk Creates a World Record taking 7 Wickets in a T20I Innings

On Thursday 26th August, Netherlands Women’s fast bowler Frederique Overdijk created a record in T20 cricket. The speedster scalped 7 wickets in the match against France in the ICC T20 World Cup European Qualifier at the La Manga Club Top Ground in Spain.

Overdjik eliminated France’s skipper Tara Britton, Poppy McGeown, Thea Graham, Emmanuelle Brelivet, Tracy Rodriguez, Emma Chance and Maelle Cargouet creating a world record. She was followed by Marloes Braat and Eva Lynch who picked up a wicket each. The France team was all-out for a meagre score of 33 turns from 17.3 overs. Out of these 33 runs, 14 were extras that included 13 wides and 1 no-ball.

The Netherlands batters Babbete de Leede and Robin Rijke easily chased the target within 4 overs at a loss of one wicket of Silver Siegers by Thea Graham. This victory was a piece of cake for the Netherlands squad. However, in their previous match against the Scotland Women, they lost by wickets. In this match, Overdjik bowled two overs but could not pick any wickets. Caroline de Lange scalped 4 wickets but her individual effort was not enough to guarantee a win for the team.

Just like Overdijk’s stellar bowling, there are many other players who achieved similar feats. In men’s cricket, Deepak Chahar earned a record of 6-7 against the Bangladesh team in November 2019 at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur. Nepal’s off-break bowler, Anjali Chand, created a record of 6-0 against the Maldives Women at the 2019 South Asian Games. Preceding Overdjik’s coup, Colin Ackermann held the record in T20 cricket. He picked 7-18 at the T20 Blast’s 2019 edition while playing for the Leicestershire team in the match against Birmingham Bears. Ackermann was the sole bowler to achieve this feat until Overdjik joined him recently.

The Netherlands Women will now clash with the German team on Friday, August 27 once again at the La Manga Club Bottom Ground.
