India are currently touring West Indies and after a successful ODI series, played their first T20I game on Sunday, November 10. Their women’s team won this game comprehensively – by 84 runs. India also saw some stellar batting performances in the form of Smriti Mandhana’s 67 off 46 balls and Shafali Verma’s record-breaking 73 off 49 balls.

Breaking records is one thing, but breaking your idol’s records is a different achievement altogether. A few weeks ago in an exclusive chat with Female Cricket, Shafali had said that she knows she made her International debut before her idol had back in his time and laughed saying how that was her target, and now, has broken another one of his records. Shafali’s maiden half-century came at the age of 15 years 285 days, making her the youngest Indian to score a half-century in International Cricket. This feat was previously achieved by master-blaster Sachin Tendulkar at 16 years 214 days in the maiden test match he played.

Shafali’s explosive knock consisted of six boundaries and four sixes. She also had a record opening stand of 143 runs with Smriti Mandhana, leading India to put up a difficult target of 185 runs. India lead the 5 match T20I series 1-0.
