South Africa’s women team will be awarded almost 27 Lakh Rupees for their historic victory over India in the ODI and T20I series. The South African sports minister Nathi Mthetwa at an award ceremony announced that a total of R500,000 (INR 27,00,000) will be equally distributed among the squad that played India in their away series.
In the 5 match ODI series, the Proteas women beat India by 4-1, and also clinched the T20I series 2-1. Before playing India, they had hosted Pakistan for an ODI and T20I series, which again they had won by 3-0.
Describing it as an exceptional performance, Mthetwa said- “The Proteas women’s cricket team once again made history by winning the ODI Series and the T20 Series (in India). Before the India tour, the team reached the semi-finals of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, which was held in Australia last year.”
Apart from the woman cricketers, many other athletes from the country were appreciated by the minister as he said – “Whilst we continue to battle the pandemic, South African athletes have continued to battle in international sporting competitions. These soldiers have been flying the South African flag high and continued to entertain and bring joy to South Africans.”
Lizelle Lee was awarded the player of the series in the ODI for her magnificent century and double half-centuries. Not just that, she also attained the top spot in the ICC rankings, was one of the reasons for the team to take the second spot in the ICC Team rankings, and at the end became the ICC Player of the Month for March 2021.
In the same series, Indian ODI skipper Mithali Raj completed 10,000 career international runs and 7,000 ODI runs, and also became the player to have made the most number of appearances in international cricket.
