The inaugural Hundred competition has garnered a lot of attention and praise from fans across the world. The tournament that kick-started on July 21 has seen plenty of exciting games, thrilling contests between players, and top-notch quality of cricket being played not only by international stars but also the domestic players.
During one of the games that was played on August 1, English domestic player Issy Wong, who represents Birmingham Phoenix, smashed the number 1 T20I all-rounder in the world Natalie Sciver for two consecutive sixes. The 19-year old right-arm seamer smashed the Trent Rockets’ skipper for two maximums off the 88th and 89th deliveries of the Phoenix innings. Both the shots went beyond the 70m mark.
Wong came in to bat when the Phoenix were struggling at 86-7 off 75 balls. With 60 runs to get in the last 25 balls, the Phoenix tail had no option but to use the long handle. The 19-year old muscled 27 off 11 balls, hitting two boundaries and as many sixes to help her team reduce the deficit. Against the run of play, the youngster fell to Katherine Brunt on the 94th ball, with Phoenix needing another 22 runs to win.
Though Wong is predominantly a bowler, it was impressive to see her ability with the bat down the order. Early in the day, she had scalped one wicket and that of Sarah Glenn who was trapped leg before wicket.
In the tournament so far, she has picked up three wickets in four matches. She is the joint second-highest wicket-taker for the Phoenix alongside Erin Burns, Emily Arlott, and Georgia Elwiss. Apart from her bowling, she has also contributed with the bat as she has scored 43 runs in three innings, including the best of 27, which came against the Trent Rockets on August 1. Her strike rate has been impressive at 153.57 and she has shown her ability with the bat lower down the order.
Wong has the reputation of being one of the fastest pacers in the world of women’s cricket, having clocked in speeds of 70 miles/hour already. With age on her side, she has a good chance of making it to the England national team in the coming years. She was a part of the national squad that traveled to New Zealand this year in January, however, she didn’t get a game. There is seldom any doubt about her talent and it is only a matter of time that she makes her debut for England.
