As the eleventh season of ICC Women’s World Cup commences, let’s rewind back through the memory lane of the undisputed champions of the prestigious international tournament for the women athletes of the sport. Southern Stars, the Australian Women’s national cricket team have bagged the World Champions title more than any other team.

The international cricket history of the team dates back to 1934. It all began competing against England then, the test which Aussie Women lost. Pacing forth since then, Australia Women’s Cricket team have made their mark in the field of cricket. The Women’s Cricket World Cup being the highest form of the sport, the side has shown their complete domination. The inaugural women’s Cricket World Cup tournament held two years before the first men’s World Cup in 1973 was won by England women.

Later, by the fourth season in 1988, Australia had bagged the title thrice already. They were World Champions consecutively in 1978, 1982, 1988, while the rest of the World had one title to their name; that, bagged by Englishwomen. Since then, the hunt for the title led Australia Women to win every alternate World Cup season until date, currently entering the Women’s World Cup in 2017 as defending champions.

The Southern Stars’ current side heading to women’s cricket world Cup is led by Meg Lanning. The 21-player preliminary squad included Sarah Aley, Kristen Beams, Alex Blackwell, Nicole Bolton, Piepa Cleary, Holly Ferling, Ashleigh Gardner, Grace Harris, Rachael Haynes, Alyssa Healy, Jess Jonassen, Tahlia McGrath, Beth Mooney, Erin Osborne, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Molly Strano, Belinda Vakarewa, Elyse Villani, Amanda-Jade Wellington led by Meg Lanning. The side’s addition includes uncapped bowlers Sarah Aley, Piepa Cleary, Molly Strano and Belinda Vakarewa. According to reports from Cricket Australia, the final 15-player squad was selected following a three-week training camp at the Bupa National Cricket Centre in Brisbane from 24 April – 12 May. Surely, the Southern Stars would be put their best foot forward for another successful stint.
