Gearing up for the World Cup

Cricket fans ahoy! It’s that time of the year again when we revel in the beautiful sound of the bat hitting the ball, when everyone works with one eye on the TV set. It is cricket season again, time to bleed blue for the country.

ICC World Twenty20 is just round the corner. This time hosted by India, the tournament starts on the 3rd of March. And this time, both the men and women teams are confident they will get the cup home.

The Women’s Twenty20 would run parallel to the men’s tournament and would have ten teams competing.

The Indian women are gearing up to showcase some masterstrokes on the pitch, confident to do their best on the home ground. Australia, on the other hand, would play hard to defend the title, which has been theirs since 2010.

Mithali Raj, captain of the Indian women’s cricket team believes that if they won this tournament, women’s cricket would become more popular in the country. Something the team has been struggling for since their establishment.

“It is time we need to break the jinx of reaching only the finals in major events and win the cup,” Mithali had said in an interview.

In England and Australia, the women’s game is as popular as the men’s. That can be achieved in India only if our women come in the limelight, and victories in the upcoming tournament will surely bring them up.

Mithai believes that she knew the capabilities of the players in the team.

“The team looks really good overall but needs to step into a different zone now,” she had said.

Beating Australia in their home ground in the T20 series was unexpected for her. Unlike in the past, this was a collective effort of the whole team, instead of just one or two players.

The T20 tournament is going to be held in eight cities at beautiful stadiums like Wankhede in Mumbai and M.A. Chidambaram stadium in Chennai. The finals are going to be held at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The women’s tournament starts on 15th March and ends on 3rd April.

The Indian women’s team are tying up their hair and scrunching up their sleeves to snatch away the Twenty20 world cup from Australia. They would need all the cheering we can give them. So, stand up, raise your hands, blow those whistles and scream out loud. This time not only for the men but for our women too.

Let’s gear up for the kill and stand with them till the end.
